Wildflower and Waterfall Self-guided Tours in Plumas County, Northern California

1.  Table Mountain: A wildflower garden flourishes on a plateau of ancient volcanic rock from March through May.   .

  2. The Feather River Canyon: Cascading waterfalls and wildflowers in the spring highlight the canyon's natural beauty - especially showy from April through June with a constantly changing display of wildflower color. 
 

3.  Butterfly Valley Botanical Area: Rare California Pitcher-plants (Darlingtonia Californica)  can be viewed in this 500-acre area managed by the Plumas National Forest. This insectivorous species and four others can be seen on a self-guided driving/walking trail, May through July.  From Quincy go 3.5 miles north on Hwy. 70 and make a left turn on Blackhawk Road.

4. Indian Valley/Genesee Valley - Antelope Lake Beckwourth Route: May and June are the best wildflower months. Beautiful displays may be seen in Indian Valley, Genesee Valley and along the route from Antelope Lake to Beckwourth.

5. Chester and Lake Almanor Area: Late May and June are the best wildflower months, although flowers begin to bloom in early spring. Flowers grace the landscape on all routes around the lake as well as in and around the town of Chester.

 6. Sierra Valley- Maddalena Ranch- Late May and June are the best wildflower months. But spring canoeing and birdwatching is popular.

 7. Lakes Basin Recreation Area June and July are the best wildflower months. Due to the high elevation, the color display lasts well in to the summer months.

Joe Willis of Quincy, zoologist turned naturalist and wildflower expert:

I think this will be a great season for wildflowers, but will start off rather fast, making up for lost time due to snow, and will be back on a normal schedule by mid-June.  In other words, what would normally happen from March 1 through today will happen over the next two or three weeks.  I'm calling it a "compressed spring."
